There is no wrong way.
We are called to embody all sounds - the beautiful, the ugly, the rigid, the soft, the loud, the grungy. To experience all potential vocal sounds is the undertaking of a lifetime, best taken in small, digestible bites. Receiving the wisdom of each of these sounds alters the perception of the human body, expanding it to include the connections between us.
Each life is completely unique unto itself. A signature, authentic vibration is inherent in every body. The circumstances of a person’s life curate a set of preferences - likes and dislikes. These preferences create instincts towards and away from certain environments and experiences which influence our bodily make up. That shifts and shapes the vibrations bodies emit, and causes shifts in the web of consciousness as a whole.
When eating an elephant, where does one start? There is no correct order or timeline in which to experience these sounds. There is no possible wrong turn, wrong choice, no way to get lost and no waste of time. The voice dictates the way.
Since no two people have the same life purpose, no one has the same journey to an authentic vibration. Each person’s path to their sound is unique unto them. If there is a path neatly paved for easy walking, it is likely not the path worth travelling. Instead, look for the path overgrown with weeds, wildflowers and thorns in need of slow, meticulous excavating.
This makes singing together all the more delicious. Every time we mingle sounds with one another we are sharing our lived experience on that sound. We become the vibration together.
Last week, I had the dreamiest experience singing with a packed room of change makers at Soho House in Manhattan. I was asked to participate in the event- a panel for creative womxn - just four days before. I originally had plans at the time, but my impulses gave me a hell yes, so I rearranged it all. Everyone was kind and receptive to the changes. Everything aligned for me to participate, and the people I got to meet and sing with the night of the event inspired me deeply. There are so many people dedicating their lives to making things more beautiful, more tender, more honest. More connected. I hope to also be one of those people.
If you find yourself anxious to be doing it wrong, you literally can’t. Every single experience, pivot, challenge, joy is directing you on your path to learn and grow and change.
‘even with the light on’ has been out for almost a month, and the responses from you all have been incredible. Thank you for listening.
“The Body” releases on 8/9, the day after the Lion’s Gate, the day of the full moon. If I am being honest, I am a bit anxious about how it will be received. I let my weird shine through quite a bit on it, and little me worries about being misunderstood. My higher self is excited to break some eggs. The part of me that knows there are no bad sounds, all sounds expand us to grow into who we are meant to be. Above all I hope it finds the other weirdos who need it at this current moment in time.
Brooklyn, save the date! When I am back 8/20 The Unstruck Thing is BACK with a mindful movement/dance party to celebrate “The Body”. We will shake our meat suits together at the beautiful Head Hi by the brooklyn navy yard.
Love you all so much,
